| The Ashes failure may lead to a major shake up in Australian cricket |
Australian cricket faces the prospect of a far-reaching shake-up when the country's Board decides next Tuesday to review the disastrous Ashes performance, a report said on Monday.
An independent chairperson is being sought, preferably from a corporate background, to assess the wider problems in the game's structure in Australia that led to the crushing 1-3 home series defeat against England.
Former captain Steve Waugh has been mooted as a possible overseer or contributor in the review, according to Australian Associated Press.
According to the report, CA power brokers will deliberate on how to get to the bottom of the Ashes mess, besides endorsing detailed plans for next summer's city-based Twenty20 competition which could cause the greatest shift in Australian cricket since World Series Cricket revolution of late 1970s.
"What we're keen on is someone external with expertise that would allow them to manage a review, and we're looking at a range of people across corporate Australia," a CA spokesman was quoted as saying in the report.
"We're looking for someone with some grunt, who can give the review the credibility it needs, and who can make recommendations that are respected."
The ultimate goals of an expanded T20 contest are to generate enough money to free CA from its state of utter reliance on Indian finance, the report said.
In that sense, the new league is part of a push to take cricket into the realm of European soccer, where showpiece international matches and tournaments occur less often amid the unending treadmill of club fixtures played by cosmopolitan teams, it said.
